Kalbar is a small town (pop 1000) about an hours drive west of Brisbane. To spread some positivity in times of hardship the town organises an annual hay bale sculpture competition. The only rules are that the hay artworks must be 80 per cent hay, and include a pun. There’s a free breakfast, bush poets and craft stalls in the main street which was very busy by 9am.
We saw it on an ABC show (click here) and immediately decided to go. More on Facebook (here). This year there’s 81 sculptures (click here for the map). Here are photos of our favorites: click on a picture to view full size – they will advance automatically.
